Unlocking Innovation in the Field
How Simple Design Transformed Knowledge-Sharing for MSF

THE CHALLENGE
Médecins Sans Frontières needed to unlock the innovation potential of their grassroots community—but existing knowledge-sharing systems weren't reaching field staff in remote locations.

THE INSIGHT
Through field research, Hetco discovered that MSF's most impactful innovations were already happening organically. Staff were creating ingenious solutions daily, but these insights remained siloed. The real opportunity wasn't building a complex platform—it was making brilliant ideas accessible and actionable for others.

THE SOLUTION
MSF Makes: a hybrid platform that treats innovations like recipes. Each innovation is broken down into simple, replicable steps with clear equipment lists and skill requirements. The printed magazine format ensures accessibility regardless of connectivity, whilst the digital platform enables ongoing engagement through image galleries, author stories, and relevant case studies.

THE IMPACT
By choosing simplicity over complexity—and print over purely digital—we created a knowledge-sharing system that actually gets used. Field staff can now discover, adapt, and implement proven innovations, turning isolated insights into widespread impact across MSF's global operations.
